The SAMA 24 awards

The second leg of the South African Music Awards took place on Saturday, 2 June 2018 at Sun City. The SAMA 24 were hosted by Somizi Mhlongo, Dineo Ranaka and Mpho Popps. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa as well as Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthetwa were among the guests who stole the show.

Skolopad faints at the SAMAs

Skolopad faints

Entertainer Skolopad had to be stretchered out by paramedics after she collapsed. Paramedics said she was fine and suffering from exhaustion.

According to reports found on Sunday World, Skolopad whose real name is Nonhlanhla Qwabe, was taken to hospital but a source told Sunday World that Qwabe insisted that she was fine and wanted to be taken back to her hotel room to rest.

“She fainted, she is OK, it was just some weird exhaustion. But she is awake and still on my stretcher,” the source told the paper.

Sands and Mobi Dixon disqualified from SAMAs 2018

Mobi Dixon SAMA 2018

The South African Music Awards (SAMA) said on Friday that they had disqualified Sands and Mobi Dixon from receiving SAMA Awards.

The Recording Industry of South Africa (Risa) said Tigi by Sands which was nominated in the Record of the Year category and Lake by the Ocean by Mobi Dixon which was up for Best Remix have been struck off the nominees list.

The statement issued by the SAMA said “Sands is a citizen of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) and as such is excluded from being considered for a SAMA in the Record of the Year category. Mobi Dixon’s Lake by the Ocean is a remix of an international song which is in contravention of the SAMA rules.”

Dixon has been replcaed by Mwanagu by Jackie Queens and VeneiGrette remixed by Enoo Napa while Tigi by Sands has been replaced by Love Me In The Dark by Sketchy Bongo featuring Kaien Cruz.

Kgomotso Christopher has been appointed as Chair Of the Naledi Theatre Awards Board

Scandal actress Kgomotso Christopher has been appointed as Chair Of the Naledi Theatre Awards Board.

The Naledi Theatre Awards have been in existence for 11 years and are recognised as the Premier Awards event on the Gauteng Theatre Calenda.

Kgomotso said in an official statement, that she had been a part of the judging panel for the “Theatre for Children and Young Audiences.”

“The Naledi Awards are SA’s equivalent of the Tony Awards and in their fourteen-year history, I have had the privilege to contribute to the institution in various ways. Over the past five years, I have been part of the judging panel for the category of “Theatre for Children and Young Audiences”. In 2017 I joined the Board of Directors and I will continue to serve the Board, in my new role as Chair,” – Kgomotso Christopher said.

Robbie Malinga has been nominated for SAMA award

Robbie Malinga SAMA Awards

The late Robbie Malinga has been nominated at the 24th annual South African Music Awards (SAMA). Robbie died on Christmas Day last year after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

His last self-titled album got a nomination in the Best Afro Pop Album category less than a year after his passing.

The iconic musician is set to face Mafikizolo (20), Zahara (Mgodi), Ntando (Mayibue) and Blaq Diamond (Inqola) in the category.

During his musical career, Robbie won two SAMA awards; Best Remix for Indlela Yam in 2015 and Best Produced Album for Zahara’s Country Girl in 2016.

Mo Flava wins Liberty Radio Award

Metro FM radio personality and Club DJ, Mo Flava, took home the coveted Best Afternoon Drive Show (commercial) award for The Drive on Metro FM, at the prestigious annual Liberty Radio Awards which took place this past Saturday.

This was Mo Flava’s first win at the annual Liberty Radio Awards and is testament to the hard work that Mo Flava has put in over the years to make sure that he is constantly honing his craft to be a better radio presenter every day.

Comedian and radio host, Skhumba Hlophe has been announced as the host of the 2018 Savanna Newcomer Showcase.

“Savanna created this event to give our country’s talented newcomers a platform to shine and we’ve seen standing ovations annually for new comics that come out of nowhere and blow us away,” – says Diego Jacobs, Savanna RSA Brand Activation Manager.

Each newcomer comedian will be given five minutes to perform for the audience and make a lasting impression. This gives the public and the comedy fraternity the chance to figure out who they should be voting for.

Skhumba is the 2017 winner of the Savanna Comic of the Year Award and the winner of the Flying Solo Award for two years running. Previous Savanna newcomer winners include Daniel Friedman (Deep Fried Man), Dillan Oliphant, Schalk Bezuidenhout, Loyiso Madinga, Ebenhaezer Dibakwane, Thabiso Mhlongo and Yaaseen Barnes.

The Savanna Newcomer Showcase will take place on Sunday, 20 May 2018 at The Soweto Theatre.

Dudu ‘Lady D’ Khoza Liberty Radio Awards Hall of Fame

Award wining radio presenter Dudu Khoza, best known as Lady D, will be inducted into Liberty Radio Awards Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame recognises people who have been in the industry for over 15 years, who are either still in the business, or who have retired.

Dudu has been a Living Legend on Ukhozi FM for more than 15 years and an inspiration to thousands of people around the country, particularly women, not just with her motivational and charismatic radio persona but also with the number of initiatives that she is currently involved in which are aimed at empowering the youth, women as well as disadvantaged communities.

Lady D Khoza has spent all 25 years of her career in radio on air at Radio Bantu, which became Radio Zulu and is now known as Ukhozi FM. She was even a part of the team that came up with the station’s current name.

In 2012, Khoza won the Best Daytime Presenter award at a commercial radio station.

All the winners at the 12th Annual SAFTAs

The 12th Annual South African Film and Television (SAFTAs) awards took place at Sun City to honour outstanding achievement in the industry over the past year.

The event was hosted by media personality Thando Thabete and Phat Joe (Majota Kambule).

This year the Saftas also honoured Nelson Mandela’s centenary. The theme of the event was ‘Our Stories Are Gold’ in honour of “those who have captured our hearts, minds and imaginations through the telling of our unique stories.”
