Review: A Star Is Born for the Oscars

A Star Is Born for the Oscars

Hollywood loves a good drama, which may explain why each generation is treated to their own version of ‘A Star Is Born’. This is a movie that has been remade four times since the original, but it’s arguably this latest version that ranks as the greatest.

Nominated for five Golden Globes and eight Academy Awards, ‘A Star Is Born’ tells the story of Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) a grizzled, hard-drinking country singer who once scaled the heights of fame, but as the movie opens, is hurtling towards the bottom in a storm of alcohol and drugs. One evening he stumbles into a bar searching for more booze and catches a performance by a waitress named Ally (Lady Gaga), and he’s stunned by her raw talent. Ally has been told that while her songs are amazing, she isn’t pretty enough to be a singer.

Jack invites her to come on tour with him and, against her initial misgivings, convinces her to sing with him on stage. The two develop strong feelings for each other and fall in love, but problems start when Ally’s career starts to take off while Jack’s remains in a downward spiral due to his inability to kick the booze and drugs. It’s not long before Jack’s jealousy and addictions get the best of him and Ally starts to suffer as a result.

‘A Star Is Born’ is a heart-rending tale, but it’s told absolutely beautifully. Bradley Cooper – who also directed, co-wrote and produced the film – is superb as Jack, a man staring bitterly at the last grains of fame he has as they run through his fingers. Cooper doesn’t play Jack as a walking trainwreck, though; rather he’s a man aware of his own failings who can’t help self-harming. As one character points out, it’s not Ally’s success that’s destroying Jack – he’s doing all the damage himself.

The film’s true revelation is Lady Gaga as Ally. The popstar turned actor is genuinely moving as she traces Ally’s journey from an insecure, yet talented singer right the way to an arena-filling juggernaut. She is held back by her love for Jack, certainly, but his pain is a huge source of her inspiration for songs. In a way, they’re as bad as they are good for each other.

The remaining cast is fantastic; special props should go to Sam Elliott as Jack’s brother Bobby, Dave Chapelle as his former musical partner who charted a path to sobriety and Rafi Gavron as Ally’s manager, who is a complete sleaze. But the real draw here is Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga between whom the chemistry is undeniable; they reveal their characters’ damage by inches, hinting that love may prove the path to redemption, and then tearing it away. A Star Is Born is a tear-dropper, for sure, but it’s also one of the best films you’ll watch all year.

Consumers can catch this and other Oscar nominated blockbuster movies such as Black Panther and BlackKklansman available now on streaming service, black.

“The hosts bring their unique blend of personalities, humour and insider knowledge to various topics that affect millennials which we term “Hashtags”,” – Juvais Dunn, executive producer at Weldun Media told IOL.

“After looking at what is currently on offer in the TV market space, we felt that there is a gap for a talk show that addresses real issues faced by millennials, whilst giving Africa a voice to the rest of the world. We have always been passionate about opening up the industry, so choosing talent for the show was very strategic,” added Dunn.

According to BONA magazine, the show will have a range of topics that cater to millennials with a primary focus on social and Lifestyle topics.

Hashtag is set to air on eExtra (DSTV channel 195) on the 2nd of March 2019 at 4pm.

Connie and Shona Ferguson distribute over 2000 school shoes in KZN

Shona Ferguson at Iziko Primary School

The journey to distributing school shoes to 20 000 children in need across South Africa is in full swing. The #KrushGoodness project recently saw Connie and Shona Ferguson and the Krush Goodness Krew visiting schools in KZN this week, where over 2000 learners received a brand new pair of Smart Steps school shoes as part of the project.

Over the past few weeks 12 schools across SA have been visited by the Krush Goodness Krew, including: Connie Ferguson, Zenande Mfenyane, Dineo Ranaka, Lalla Hirayama, Letshego Zulu, Thembi Seete, Ayanda Thabethe, Leanne Manas, Brent “Good Things Guy” Lindeque, Shona Ferguson and Heather Hook. Over 13 000 pairs of school shoes have been distributed so far, with the remaining 7 000 to be distributed over the next few weeks.

According to Stats SA, approximately 70% of learners walk to school every day, many of whom walk barefoot or with damaged shoes. The #KrushGoodness project will make a sustainable difference in the lives of 20 000 learners across South Africa, giving them the confidence to conquer the world one step at a time.

We caught up with Connie Ferguson shortly after her visit to Livangeli Primary School in KZN this week.

What drew you to participate in the #KrushGoodness project?

I’m always keen to get involved in any initiative that makes a positive difference in people’s lives. I have experienced first-hand how something as important and necessary as school shoes can be a luxury when you can’t afford basic living requirements. As a child in standard 3, my brand new shoes were stolen while we were cleaning our classroom. I had to wear my small old shoes for the better part of that year as my parents couldn’t afford to get another new pair. Everything was budgeted to the last cent. So I know that feeling that these children are going to have when they receive their school shoes. I can’t wait to see the looks on their faces.

What were you most looking forward to about visiting Livangeli Primary School?

I was most looking forward to seeing the reactions of the children.

Are you involved with any other community or CSI initiatives personally?

To date we have been supporting existing programmes. We are in the process of setting up our family foundation, due to launch early in the new year.

Do you remember any celebrities coming to your school when you were a child? What memory sticks out the most for you and why?

I went to school in Botswana and the biggest celebrity there was the president. I remember the excitement when he visited my home town Lobatse to deliver food parcels. It just gives that comforting sense that someone cares.

What is the one piece of advice you have for young fans of yours?

My advice to my young fans is to know that they are masters of their own destiny. God listens to prayer and sees ones’ heart. Your current situation does not define who you are and who you are meant to be, don’t be afraid to dream big and work very hard towards making those dreams reality.

What does the rest of 2019 hold for you?

2019 for me holds only the best and nothing less. I’m always striving for growth and to be a better version of myself, and I’m open to constant evolution.

Taking to Instagram last month, the Idols SA judge posted a video where she reveals that she has a serious question.

Namely, “why are these married men busy on the streets asking us out?” referring to single women.

“The problem is also with the ladies though as they have created a platform for this to become a norm. If all women valued themselves as you do Unathi we would not have to deal with such. It would take a brave dog to go astray if he knew ladies are tough with the cookie but unfortunately we live In a society where not all women are in favour to support each other (sic),” – one fan responded.

The reason she asked the question was that one of her best friends asked her what it’s like being single.

Nkayi replied by saying that a year ago 100% of men that were hitting on her were married.

She went on to say that she would like to know what a married man is saying about you, the single person, when he approaches you.

“Is he saying that you must know your place in future? Is he saying at times you cannot call? Is he saying that when he looks at you he can see that you share?” said Unathi.
