SA Celebs Boycott H&M Clothing Brand Over Monkey Advert

SA Celebs Boycott H&M Clothing Brand Over Monkey Advert

Celebrities, local and international, have vowed to boycott international retain brand H&M, after it posted an advert with a black child model wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the words “Coolest Monkey In The Jungle”.

The advert, which sparked outrage on social media, was posted as part of the brand’s global online marketing for its “jungle” theme.

Reacting to the photograph, many called out the brand and called it to be boycotted.

South African celebrities were no exception.

Choreographer Somizi Mhlongo lambasted the brand for never having black people in their campaigns, despite operating in South Africa.

“I’ve never been a fan of H&M since day one [when] they launched in South Africa. First, they never had people of colour in their campaigns, even when they came to Africa. Now, this. Let’s show them the power of monkey rand by not buying ish from them,” he said on Instagram.

Other celebrities also took to social media to call out the brand for the racist advert.

H&M responded with an apology “we apologise for offending customers with an image of a printed hooded top that was published on selected global online channels. The image has been removed from all online channels and the product will not be for sale in South Africa.”

Arts and culture minister Nathi Mthethwa, like many social media users, rejected the brand’s apology, saying it was not sufficient.

“We are absolutely appalled by this racist advertisement attributed to @HM which strips the child in the green of basic human dignity. While we note the apology as necessary we cannot accept that it’s sufficient based on the amount of damage it has caused,” – Nathi Mthethwa said.

“Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. I’m deeply offended and will not be working with @hm anymore…” – The Weeknd tweeted.

How South African celebrities make money through social media posts

celebrities get paid on social media

You might be wondering why some South African celebrities post about certain brands and products on social media. Most of these celebrities get paid to post about those brands.

Khanyi Mbau, Thando Thabethe, Boity Thulo and Lerato Kganyago, who have millions of followers on their social media platforms, have openly spoken about how much they charge for a post on their social media accounts. The first time we heard about this concept was with the Kardashian sisters, who rake in about $500,000 (R6,7 million) per Instagram post. Celebrities with millions of followers get paid thousands of rands to just tweet about a certain product. Local celebrities revealed how much they earn for just one Instagram post.

CELEBRITIES ENDORSING TOP BRANDS

According to a Sunday newspaper, Generations actress and Metro FM presenter, Thando, charges R10 000 for brands who want her to tweet about their product – and that is just for one tweet! With her 368 000 Twitter followers and one million Instagram followers, she is making loads of money for sure.

Khanyi, who is always on social media for skin bleaching and surgeries, revealed that she is very strategic about the way she chooses clients. She told a Sunday newspaper that she weighs her options carefully, especially when it comes to dealing with competitive brands. “It has to be a brand that I can associate with. You can lose out as a person while endorsing a certain product because of its reputation in the market. I charge between R10 000 and R15 000 per post,” revealed Khanyi.

Lerato revealed to a Sunday newspaper that her fee starts from R5 000 and goes higher. The bigger the brand, the more money she earns. The TV personality has 892 000 Instagram followers and 608 000 on Twitter.

According to reports, Boity Thulo, who recently launched her body toning capsules, charges R60 000 for five tweets. She told a publication that she works only with brands that align with her own brand. “And that R60 000 is way less than the attention the brand is getting. Imagine posting a tweet for 3, 5 million users, that is massive. The brand would be charged way higher than what I charge if they go on TV,” revealed Boity. When Move! contacted the celebs, they were shy to reveal how much money they make and how they got into doing business on social media.

COMPANIES GETTING ENDORSEMENTS FROM CELEBRITIES

Companies are willing to pay millions of rands to get their brands out there. It’s not only celebrities who can make money on social media. If you have a massive following on social media, you could find yourself making money too.
