Idols SA accused of trans-shaming a contestant

Idols SA judges Season-13

According to All4women, Idols SA judges, producers and even the show’s host, Proverb, have been accused of trans-phobia after making fun of a contestant whose gender was not immediately clear.

An open letter in the Huffington Post has called on Idols SA judges to apologise to a contestant who auditioned on one of the show’s recent episodes, Arshen Madlopha. After Arshen finished singing their rendition of Beyonce’s hit song, Halo, the judges engaged themselves in a debate as they attempted to figure out if Madlopha was male or female.

Guest judge Kelly Khumalo begins by asking if “it is a girl” before unathi adds “It’s a girl”. Meanwhile, Randall and Somizi are convinced that “it is a boy”.

Watch how it all unfolded, right after Arshen finds out that they will not be making it to the next round:

Host, Proverb, is also heard in the voice over questioning if Arshen had let both the boys and the girls down.

It didn’t take long for South African Twitter to catch wind of this discrimination
Ex Idols singer, Melanie Lowe was among the critics:

Rumor: Big Brother Mzansi returns

Big Brother Mzansi 2017

Will you be auditioning for Big Brother Mzansi 2017 soon?

After not having a Big Brother Mzansi last year, it may seem like the reality show is returning for season 3 this year.

Last year around this time, the Big Brother Mzansi team had confirmed that there would be no Big Brother airing in 2016. Much to our disappointment, we had to live with the fact that our entertainment palate was going to be left bland without Mzansi’s own housemates entertaining us for a period of 3 months.

But much to our excitement it may seem as though DStv has heard our cries and is apparently bringing Big Brother Mzansi back.

Industry gossip mongers have mentioned that there is going to be a few auditions to be held in the near future.

However, it may also seem like Big Brother Mzansi is looking at a different time line. Usually, the auditions are held earlier in the year or around November and December. By this time Big Brother would already be airing on TV as it’s more of a winter show than a summer one.

So does this mean Big Brother will now be airing in the summertime or are they preparing for Big Brother Mzansi 2018?

Big Brother Mzansi’s main host, Lungile Radu hasn’t mentioned anything about this years season. If anything, he has been promoting his show Uyang’thanda Na? and Home Ground which he presents alongside Minnie Dlamini. Wait, doesn’t he also host The Voice SA?

Økuntakinte launches his Melanin Girls Campaign in SA

20 year old UK born, Ghanaian EDM musician, Økuntakinte, launches hisMelanin Girls Campaign in South Africa today following the highly successful debut campaign in Ghana earlier this year which caught the attention of the likes of BBC and is believed to be Ghana’s most engaging social media campaign to date having trended on social media for four consecutive days.

To join the Melanin Girls Campaign, post a selfie of yourself with the hashtag #MelaninGirlSA and tag @Okuntakinte and stand a chance to win a cash prize of R7000.

The Melanin Girls Campaign will run for the next 7 days thereafter Økuntakinte will select the winning selfie at random and announcement the winner on 14 October 2016 on his social media pages.

With the recent race challenges facing South Africa, Økuntakinte’s Melanin Girls Campaign aims to celebrate girls and women of all skin types, with the underlying message that regardless of how light or dark your skin colour is (melanin) you need to be comfortable in the skin you were born with and we need to celebrate all our “melanin” girls.

Økuntakinte’s Melanin Girls Campaign in Ghana was launched with a single of the same title. Following suit, Økuntakintehas done a remix to this single featuring South Africa’s Moonchild Sanelly. The #MelaninGirlsRemix single is available on all major digital platforms globally and has started enjoying rotation on South African radio with a music video to follow suit.

“The song Melanin Girls celebrates dark-skinned girls and is a call-to-action to embrace their beauty. It’s sort of an anti-bleaching campaign. However, the essence of the Melanin Girls Campaign is for everyone to embrace their beauty in its natural form regardless of colour. I hope the campaign will be well received by the South African audience as well as my new single and music video” expresses Økuntakinte.
