Comedian Skhumba Hlophe donates 150 wheelchairs

Skhumba Hlophe 150 wheelchairs

In the spirit of giving back to communities, comedian Skhumba Hlophe teamed up with Diageo SA to donate 150 wheelchairs to five homes for people living with disabilities across Gauteng.

The wheelchairs will be handed over to the homes during August.

Skhumba Hlophe hosted two comedy shows titled, Walk this Way with Skhumba Hlophe, on 26 and 27 July at the Market Theatre and all proceeds from the show’s ticket sales went towards the purchase of wheelchairs.

“We are proud and excited to be a part of this wonderful initiative. The value of assisting and empowering citizens is one that is entrenched in the corporate culture of Diageo SA and all its employees. It is heartwarming to be able to make a real and positive difference in the life of someone who desperately needs it,” said Zanele Njapha, acting corporate relations manager of Diageo SA.

“Our company has a rich history in its support of various corporate social responsibility programmes. We always endeavour to deliver impactful and sustainable change to enrich the lives of communities in which we operate.”

“These wheelchairs will go a long way in ensuring that those who need them most will regain a sense of independence as they become mobile,” added Njapha.

A total of 30 wheelchairs will be handed over by Skhumba Hlophe and Diageo SA, in partnership with Kaya FM and the Market Theatre, to each of the following beneficiary homes during the August.

Olieven Disability Centre received their wheelchairs on 4 August, followed by Impumelelo Self-Help Centre in Springs on 11 August and then Filadelfia Secondary School in Soshanguve on 18 August. The remaining beneficiaries are Tshwane Empowerment Centre in Mabopane which will receive their donation on 25 August.

The fifth beneficiary is Tembisa’s Phuthanang Training Centre for the Disabled which will receive the wheelchairs on 31 August.

Thembisa Mdoda leaves Our Perfect Wedding

Thembisa Mdoda

It’s official, very soon we won’t be seeing TV host, Thembisa Mdoda, on the hit Mzansi Magic show Our Perfect Wedding. We also heard rumours that there will be a presenter search to find her replacement.

Mdoda joined the show in November 2015 and has since been the face of OPW. At the time, she said she was ecstatic about joining the show.

“I love the show and what it stands for. I look forward to celebrating it with as many couples as I possibly can,” Mdoda was quoted as saying at the time.

Speaking to Destiny Mag, M-Net Head of Public Relations: Local Entertainment Channels, Nondumiso Mabece, confirmed this news earlier today saying that it was merely a case of Mdoda’s contract coming to an end.

“Generally, we bring in new presenters for different seasons. We are now trying to run an exercise to conduct an audition around the country so that we can find a person who can then become the OPW presenter,” said Mabece.

Head of Reality Programming for Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net Sphumelele Sibeko said the broadcaster was thrilled to have had Mdoda host the show. “Each season we introduce a new presenter and she is the perfect fit for the sixth season,” Sibeko said.

Euphonik has been hard at work organising the Tholukuthi Hey concert which is all systems go for Saturday, with a star-studded line up including DJ Tira, Ph and Maphorisa to celebrate the success of the viral hit.

Star Tholukuthi Hey went viral on Twitter after Euphonik discovered a clip and searched for the artists and took them into studio on the same day.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE on Friday morning, the DJ explained that everything is coming togethe for the concert which he planned in a few days.

“We’ve had to move to a bigger venue for the concert because we don’t want people to be cramped in a small space. The song has really resonated with a lot of people and we just want to celebrate that. A lot of people have come on board to make it a night to remember. We have Pearl Thusi as the host and a lot of brilliant supporting acts for Killer Kau and Mbali (Tholukuthi Hey hitmakers),” he said.

Euphonik is a man with a master plan where dance track Tholukuthi Hey is concerned and has had to move the party to the Black Coffee owned Zone 6 venue in Soweto. Having only discovered the artists last week, Euphonik has capitalised on the momentum of the song.

The concert will also double up as a music video set, which Euphonik hopes will be released next week.

“We have meetings and interviews after school so that Killer Kau and Mbali don’t fall behind on school work.  I’m excited but also glad that Mbali and Killer Kau are really level headed and although everything is happening so fast, they are remaining calm,” he said.

It first started off as just a simple social media song, sung by two teenagers and now Tholukhuti by Killer Kau and Mbali Sikwane has become a full blown song that is backed up with a concert that is going to be sponsored by Vodacom NXT LVL.

Killer Kau has even tested the song by performing it live at Club Kong and Taboo this week and according to people who were at the club, the song was nothing short of a success with the crowd.

I didn’t know SA was stressed about The Daily Show – Trevor Noah

Dj Fresh, Somizi and Trevor Noah

Trevor Noah has confessed he’s glad he never knew how anxious South Africans were about his debut on The Daily Show.

Speaking to Metro FM’s DJ Fresh on Monday morning, Noah said he was surprised when his friends told him people were hoping and praying that he wouldn’t “drop the ball”.

“I’m glad I didn’t know how stressed South Africans were. The pressure I had on America’s side alone … I wouldn’t have handled it if I knew South Africa was looking the same way.”

He says he’s grown enormously over the past two years.

“I’ve had to change, I’ve had to work on myself as a human being. I’ve engaged in politics like never before, I’ve probed every aspect of my mind. I think more than I used to, I apply myself more than I used to. I’m proud to say I’ve grown as a person.” – he said.

After agreeing to meet a young woman via the Reach for a Dream Foundation, Noah said he’s happy to make someone’s day. “Those are small things. If you can make another person’s day by just existing, you’ve lived your life.”

On Friday night Noah surprised guests at the Goliath Comedy Club in Johannesburg with a performance. Noah is performing at The Dome on 9, 10 and 11 August.

Idols SA accused of trans-shaming a contestant

Idols SA judges Season-13

According to All4women, Idols SA judges, producers and even the show’s host, Proverb, have been accused of trans-phobia after making fun of a contestant whose gender was not immediately clear.

An open letter in the Huffington Post has called on Idols SA judges to apologise to a contestant who auditioned on one of the show’s recent episodes, Arshen Madlopha. After Arshen finished singing their rendition of Beyonce’s hit song, Halo, the judges engaged themselves in a debate as they attempted to figure out if Madlopha was male or female.

Guest judge Kelly Khumalo begins by asking if “it is a girl” before unathi adds “It’s a girl”. Meanwhile, Randall and Somizi are convinced that “it is a boy”.

Watch how it all unfolded, right after Arshen finds out that they will not be making it to the next round:

Host, Proverb, is also heard in the voice over questioning if Arshen had let both the boys and the girls down.

It didn’t take long for South African Twitter to catch wind of this discrimination
Ex Idols singer, Melanie Lowe was among the critics:
