Thembi Seete pays tribute to her late bandmate Lebo Mathosa

It’s been 12 years since singer Lebo Mathosa passed away. Mathosa died in a car accident on 23 October 2006 at the age of 29. 

Lebo Mathosa was a popular South African kwaito singer. She started her career with the popular South African band Boom Shaka in 1994 at the age of 17, after she caught the eye of music producer Don Laka at a club in Johannesburg.

Dancer, singer, television presenter and actress Thembi Seete has paid tribute to her late bandmate Mathosa in an emotional social media post.

She and Seete were two of the popular 90s kwaito group Boom Shaka, together with Theo Nhlengethwa and Junior Sokhela.

Lebo was best known for her hit songs such as Free, I Love Music, Ntozabantu and Awudede.

Seete says it still feels like Lebo’s accident happened yesterday and that it is painful to know she is gone.

Thembi, who had been very close friends with Lebo during the height of her career, said: “I can’t believe it’s been 12 years already, I think time flies really fast. It’s 12 years yet it still feels like it happened yesterday. It is painful to know that you are gone. Your spirit has protected, inspired me and really helps me not to give up. You will forever be in our hearts, we miss and love you (sic).”

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa also took to Twitter to remember Mathosa who contributed positively to the music industry.

“Watch: Today marks the 12th anniversary of the passing of award-winning singer, sensational music icon & lead singer of the highly acclaimed 90’s Kwaito group Boom Shaka, Lebo Mathosa. She is remembered as a distinguished performer who remarkably asserted her African Identity,” – he wrote.
