Rapper Big Zulu, whose real name is Siyabonga Nene was recently arrested for allegedly physically assaulting his girlfriend and mother of his two-year-old daughter.
According to SowetanLIVE, Big Zulu grabbed his partner by the throat and threw her on the floor three times at their rented flat in Newtown, Johannesburg.
Speaking to Sunday World, the victim who cannot be named, told the publication that it was the first time the rapper laid his hands on her.
“The problem started two weeks ago when I confronted him. He was sitting outside with his friends and two girls. I called him to the side and asked him who the girls were. That was not the first time [I found him hanging around with strange women]. I asked him because I needed to know why he keeps doing that and disregarding my feelings. He got aggressive but that time he walked away,” she said.
She further told the publication that she had been battling depression which was made worse by the abusive situation. As a result, she attempted suicide by trying to overdose on pills with alcohol.
“I sent him a message to tell him it was not worth it anymore, however, he rushed home and found me before I overdosed on the pills,” she said.
Gauteng police spokesperson captain Lungelo Dlamini confirmed to the publication that an assault case against Big Zulu was opened and the accused appeared at the Johannesburg magistrate’s court on Friday.
