Popular for her amazing poetry and eclectic dress sense Sho Madjozi has been a breath of fresh air for the local music scene. This Tsonga poet and songstress has broken language barriers for her pride and preference to uphold her mother-tongue and home language XiTsonga.

It is no wonder she was selected to host this year’s Pendoring Awards. Madjozi was stellar host articulating all points and winners with ease.

The question now is, has the industry over all forgotten about our indigenous languages and what are we doing to continue upholding this as part of our heritage?

The Pendoring Awards 2018 walked the talk this year with a true first: an awards ceremony in our 10 indigenous languages only. With English sub-titles for the untransformed, steadily playing their part to transform the industry.

The winners were announced at a high energy evening – a celebration for all those in the creative industry who have excelled in driving the use of our indigenous languages in advertising.

Hosted and MC’d by linguist and comedian Pule Welch (who holds an Honours degree from Wits University specialising in the phonology of African languages), with entertainment from rapper and poet Sho Madjozi, comedian and Actor Anne Hirsch, eclectic band Bombshelter Beast and the queen of Ndebele music Dr Nothembi Mkhwebane on her electric guitar – #SpeakSouthAfrican #Pendoring2018 was loud and proud.

This year’s overall winner for the Pendoring awards is Joe Public United for their Get It Back campaign. They walked away with an overseas trip to the value of R100, 000.00 as a part of the Prestigious Umpetha Award and the advertiser SAB (AB InBev) received R550 000 in free airtime from KykNET and Mzansi Magic. The overall winning student is North-West University for their project, Volk and Vaderland. They won R10, 000.00, while every winner of a gold Pendoring received R6, 000.00 and the silver award winners walked away with R 2,500.00 each. The 2018 Craft gold winners each walked away with a R3,000.00 cash prize.
