2017 Mzansi Kwaito & House Music Awards

2017 Mzansi Kwaito & House Music Awards

The second annual Mzansi Kwaito & House Music Awards took place this past weekend at Walter Sisulu Square in Soweto.

The awards were staged to celebrate the two unique genres as they reflect who we are, says Perfecta Khumalo, founder of the awards.

This year’s theme was Spantsula, Mathand’ekhishini and All Star, attires that have for years resonated with the kwaito and house community, and dubbed street glamour.

Khumalo said: “We are here to prove that kwaito is not dead and kwaito is born again.

“We are here to motivate the legends, let them start releasing new kwaito albums, we are not talking about single albums but the whole 12-track albums,” she said.

“Currently the house artists are doing well, hence we want the kwaito artists to do the same. We want to balance the equation,” Khumalo said.

SA Actress Lara Lipschitz Wins An Award for Web Series

Lara Lipschitz Chin Up

Former YoTV star, Lara Lipschitz has made South Africa proud when she won the Best Actress award for her web series Chin Up at the 4th New York Web Fest. Lara and co-producer Devin Toselli were the first ever South African finalists at the web festival.

The series started almost exactly 4 years ago Lipschitz tells the Argus.

“The first episode was published on YouTube on the 19th of November 2013. It started as a once off video just to be creative and proactive. I love comedy and I wanted to make something that would showcase that side of me,” she explained.

Lara has featured in a number of South African soapies including Isidingo and has also acted alongside headline Hollywood stars such as Idris Elba and Daniel Radcliffe.

I’m so excited and honoured. The standard of all the nominees was so high. It’s incredible and so validating to know that South Africa can compete internationally. It’s a real dream come true.” – Lara Lipschitz said.

“Make your own work and put it out there. The future for TV is online. Netflix and showmax are proof of that. The internet makes the world a lot smaller and more accessible. Stop waiting for something to happen” – Lara told People Magazine in an interview.

My tweets actually helped promote #FillUpFNBStadium – AKA says

AKA Twitter promoting Fill Up FNB Stadium

AKA found himself in hot water after he suggested to fill FNB Stadium with Cassper Nyovest.

The rapper tweeted “I wanna do fill up FNB with Tsibip. It’s time we put this shit to bed. It’s 2017 guys …”

“Let’s do it like, watch the throne style … each guy on either side of the stadium, on a crazy LED cube or whatever and go back to back,” he added.

Now AKA claims it’s his tweets that helped promote Cassper Nyovest’s Fill Up FNB Stadium concert.

Responding to a tweet from the East Coast drive time host Bongani Mtolo said AKA is trying to ride Cassper’s wave by wanting to partner with him on his latest quest to fill up the 75 000 seater on December 2.

In a video clip, Mtolo said the two rivals must “carry on beefing”, and all encouraged fans to focus on the course at hand.

AKA who is not shy to voice out his opinion took to Twitter to respond the allegations, stating that his “tweets actually helped promote the event”

DJ Fresh joins NoExcuse campaign

DJ Fresh joins NoExcuse campaign

Sports broadcaster Robert Marawa, former Bafana Bafana player Matthew Booth and radio personality DJ Fresh joined the NoExcuse campaign against gender-based violence.

The NoExcuse campaign will take place during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children. All three say they are passionate about setting good examples for other men.

DJ Fresh says being part of the campaign was personal. “It was a personal thing for me. I have been married for 15 years and the first three years of my marriage was tricky.

“My wife and I fought a lot about nothing,” the Metro FM jock says, adding that the fights would lead to verbal abuse.

“Our son was three years old when he caught one of our fights and it bothered me that my son was seeing his dad is that guy.”

Fresh explains he went on a journey of self-discovery and had to learn to manage his temper and measure his words.

“At times we think just because we didn’t beat her up, we are not abusers. Sometimes even a loaded statement cuts deeper.”

The DJ Fresh adds he wanted to walk the marriage journey and teach his son to respect women and himself.
