Distruction Boyz and Shekinah nominated at the MTV EMAs

Gqom music duo from Durban, Distruction Boyz and singer-songwriter from Durban, Shekhinah Thandi Donnell have been nominated at the MTV EMAs (MTV European Music Awards).

MTV Europe Music Award is an award presented by Viacom International Media Networks to honour artists and music in pop culture. It was originally conceived as an alternative to the MTV Video Music Awards, which are hosted annually in the United States.

Distruction Boyz and Shekhinah are nominated in the Best African Act alongside last year’s winner Davido, Fally Ipupa and Tiwa Savage.

“That is such great news! We are super happy and this just shows that gqom is the future,” the group’s Goldmax told TshisaLIVE who broke the news to them.

More than 90% of the contestants have reported that they’ve been body shamed, highlighting the prevalence of bullying over appearances. In particular, Curvybody SA wants to embark on a campaign to share this message with both primary and high schools.

Media personality, Relebogile Mabotja, hosted a successful mentorship lunch for matric girls this past weekend at the Back O’ Moon Restaurant at Gold Reef City.

Relebogile Mabotja hosted the mentorship lunch as an initiative to motivate the young girls as they prepare for their upcoming final examinations.

The girls received numerous tips and advice and were inspired by the journeys of not only Relebogile Mabotja but some of her industry friends and colleagues, some of whom attended the lunch, and others sent through video messages such as the likes of: Zizo Tshwete, Carol Ofori, Candise Modiselle, Nothando Migogo, Sho Madjozi, Tumi Morake, Katlego Maboe, Vusi Nova, Katlego Danke, Nadia Nakai, Dr Viwe Mtwesi and Pabi Moloi just to name a few.

Each girl also received a goodie bag to take home that consisted of items from local businesses and brands that came on board to support this initiative.

“I can’t thank all the brands enough for coming on board, especially at such short notice. Every item made a huge difference! I would also like to thank Gold Reef City for helping me pay it forward by supporting my initiative,” shares Relebogile Mabotja.

The nominees for the 2018 Feather Awards have been revealed. This year marks the 10th annual Chevrolet Feather Awards. The nominees for this year’s Feather Awards were revealed at Constitution Court in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Each year, the dramatic Feather Awards recognize and celebrate the LGBTIQA+ community and the iconic personalities and achievers who inspire the community.

Winners of each category are voted for by the LGBTIQA+ community and local media.

“We were not taken seriously in the beginning and people could not see the impact that we made in making sure that the LGBTQIA+ community was heard,” Founder and CEO Thami Kotlolo said.

Celebrities who attended the nominees ceremony included the likes of Rami Chuene, Dr Lex Leo, Refilwe Modiselle, Somizi, Renate Stuurman, Smash Afrika, Bohang Moeko, Ayanda Thabethe and Lucia Mthiyane.

A special tribute to late Jazz idol, Hugh Masekela, by the Horn Summit and performances by two international jazz music icons, Cassandra Wilson and David Sanborn (both from the US), will unlock opening night of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz at the Sandton Convention Centre (27 September) in a not-to-be-missed one-night-only spectacular – a rare experience for local and visiting jazz lovers.

The Horn Summit is an assembly of some of the Jazz industry’s respected musicians including Suthukazi Arosi and Phu2ma Tiso, both on lead vocals, Percy Mbonani on Saxophone, Sydney Mavundla and Lwanda Gogana, both on Flugehorn as well as Leeroy Sauls on drums and vocals, and Cameron Ward on lead guitar. Hugh Masekela’s nephew, Selema Makgthi-Masekela, will also be part of the tribute to his uncle with his versatile guitar skill and will deliver spoken word. The Horn Summit will honour braHugh’s life with a selection of songs from his life-long catalogue.

Also gracing the stage is composer and jazz vocalist, Cassandra Wilson. Known and loved for incorporating country, blues and folk music into her work, Wilson promises a never-to-be-forgotten jazz journey ride for the joyful audience.

The Durban Fashion Fair (DFF), celebrating a seven year run ended on a high note last night (Saturday, September 22) with an award ceremony recognizing local and international emerging and established designers.

The DFF ran alongside the Durban Business Fair who also celebrated their 20th anniversary at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre and the Durban Exhibition Centre.

Themed Afrofuturism and hosted by much loved radio and television personality Anele Mdoda, the highlight of this four-day fashion extravaganza celebrated the talents of the future and recognised the maestros of the present.

The most coveted award of the evening – the Durban Designer of the Year 2018 – went to Zama Mathe, head designer of the brand Zarth.
